The all-star cast of Netflix’s new Queer Eye series — a reboot of Bravo’s early 2000s series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy — may be all fun when it comes to makeovers, but they’re serious about making a difference in the world.

Nancy Valverde (1932–2024)
Field: Activism
Nancy Valverde was a Chicana lesbian activist who stood up to unfair laws that targeted people for dressing in gender-nonconforming ways.
Rivera lived a turbulent life, struggling with drug addiction and homelessness, but Rivera was always a vocal and, at times, forceful advocate for change. From "word gaymes" to photos from the 1993 March on Washington to a dictionary of lesbian slang, the catalog provides a snapshot of gay and lesbian culture and politics in the mid-1990s.
Alice Nkom
Alice Nkom is a human rights lawyer and LGBTQ activist from Cameroon, where homosexuality is still criminalized. In 1986, he famously testified on behalf of New York’s Gay Rights Bill, asserting that “gay people are the new barometer for social change.” He died a year later at 75 years old.

Supreme Court victory, Edith Windsor made history as a leading figure in the fight for marriage equality. Especially for youth of color, transgender and gender non-conforming youth, and homeless young people, coming out remains frightening and often dangerous in the context of oppressive home, school, and street environments.

Since retiring from tennis in 1983, King has continued her work as an influential social activist, advocating for more opportunities for women and LGBTQ people in sports and beyond.
She currently serves on the Elton John AIDS Foundation's board of trustees and continues to support and fund efforts to combat homophobia and reduce LGBTQ suicide rates.

Larry Kramer
1935–2020
Larry Kramer was a writer and outspoken activist who drew attention to the HIV/AIDS crisis that disproportionately killed gay men and trans women.
Claiming that "lesbians have been in the forefront of every movement for social change," the Avengers proudly took on causes related to class, race, gender, politics, visibility, and hate crimes, and they did it with distinctive style that is still recognizable today.

As a successful publisher of gay and lesbian-themed books, Alyson Publications used its semiannual catalog to entertain its faithful customers as well as to advertise its publications.
Cox has been outspoken about access to health care for LGBTQ communities and has particularly championed the rights of trans people and people of color.
“We must lift up the stories of those most at risk, statistically trans people of color who are poor and working class,” Cox wrote in a Tumblr post in 2015. When she’s not working on a new story, you can find her reading, hitting the gym, or watching too much TV.
