Until recently, nobody spoke about police suicides — they weren’t even tracked. Although we have the due process rules set up, a lot of times, there are administrators on the city's side or whatever agency you work for who don't want to follow due process because they're afraid of what social media is going to say. Since its founding as a fraternal organization, GOAL has advocated for the rights of its members and has assisted them on matters of discrimination, harassment, and disparate treatment in the workplace.
However, I have several excellent examples of what a union leader should look like.

Ravi Satkalmi: NYC Pride excludes LGBTQ police officers.
By striving for a high level of diversity and the inclusion of all people within the organization, we stimulate intellectual growth and self-awareness of our members. It is about making us invisible, not making others safer.”
Tisch said she had “productive” talks with Heritage of Pride ahead of the parade, but at the “11th hour” she was told cops could not march in uniform two weeks ago.
“I was shocked,” she said, adding organizers did not provide a reason for the prohibition.
I've seen that before. What's your view on the overall power of unions? But if they have to choose between staying elected or helping the membership, staying is sadly what many leaders choose. That's a setback for the cause of inclusion.

Who's Pride is it anyway?
The decision to bar uniform police officers has drawn cheers- and criticism.
GOAL furthers its mission by providing training at the NY Police Academy and Jersey City Police Department, among others.
Our organization provides an arena for members to discuss their needs and concerns in a comfortable atmosphere without fear of job-related reprisals. There are a few things that we are working on when it comes to police suicide, but I think the most important thing is just the support from brothers and sisters.
I'm not afraid to fight. I’d be a happy guy if my phone stopped ringing. I'm not that type of person because I love being on the road. I'll go back to being a patrol supervisor. But if we can sit down and have a drink and come to a reasonable conclusion for both sides, I am OK with that, too. What's happening now is everybody's catering to the social media warriors or the Circuit Court of Facebook, and they make decisions based on that and not on due process.
In my short time thus far as president, I have led demonstrations at city hall and filed ethics complaints on a commissioner.
Mayor Eric Adams said at the briefing he doesn’t understand the logic.
“I truly support what GOAL is pushing for,” Hizzoner said. He is one of the smartest people I've ever met, and he got a lot done for us in the ‘90s, and he is still around.
Gay in Law Enforcement: Equality
These organizations are essential.
GOAL was founded by Charles Henry "Charlie" Cochrane, Jr. (August 5, 1943–May 5, 2008) a sergeant of the New York City Police Department, who after delivering a public testimony on anti-gay discrimination legislation pending before the New York City Council, became the first openly gay officer of the NYPD.
It seems like many union leaders come in with the best intentions.
“Our membership voted this year to continue our policy for all Marchers without any exceptions for GOAL or other organizations.”
Downey, of GOAL, dismissed that rationale because he said police officers are mandated to carry a concealed firearm when in full uniform.
“Armed NYPD Officers will still be present, just not visible as the Gay Officers Action League,” he said in a statement late Friday afternoon.
“This makes the decision about optics and not safety.
