About

U R MR GAY refers to a coincidental quirk in the lettering that appears in the title of Super Mario Galaxy.

Hidden message in Super Mario Galaxy

So, why were the certain letters colored?

Certain letters in the title are adorned with sparkles. But who knows, it's a judgement call up to the reader.

So, is there a hidden message or not?

U R *Not* “Mr. The eagle-eyed logo research scientists at Eurogamer Spain have noticed that the logo from Super Mario Galaxy 2 does not proclaim that the viewer is Mr.

Gay, partly, we assume, because that’s not a very common last name. Well, Nintendo has nipped that in the bud for the sequel.

While the first Super Mario Galaxy logo featured twinkling star placement that some found suspiciously scattered across it title, the follow-up does not.

There's simply a light spark or something of the sort, which is how this "message" was found.

Combined, line from line, the letters spell out the following: Ur Mr Gay.

So, what does it mean? People are probably thinking way too much into it and making it something that it's not. Joystiq and Kotaku covered the discussion a few days later.

The observation has become a widely referenced internet joke for decades since it was first discovered in 2007.

Origin

NeoGAF users first learned about the U R MR GAY message in a thread discussing video game "box art of the year". In order, these letters are U, R, M, R, G, A, and Y.

Considering "U" and "R" to be abbreviations for "you" and "are," and splitting the letters into words appropriately, there appears to be a hidden message of telling the viewer, "You are Mr. Gay". However, as covered by Destructoid and The Escapist, some people noticed that looking at the letters in reverse yielded another message that could be seen as Y, A, I, M, R, and U (Yeah, I am, are you?).

Is that an actual message or just some sort of coincidence?

Personally, I'm pretty sure it's just nothing and someone was bored and noticed the light sparks and turned it into something that went way too far.

Discussion of this particular game's title continued in its own dedicated thread, titled "Super Mario Galaxy boxart says you're gay", on September 18, 2007.

Spread

Less than a day since NeoGAF users discussed the lettering, Destructoid posted an article about it. A lot of people have made a big deal out of it, saying it's homophobic or that Nintendo is "calling us gay" or something of the sort.

On the Club RSX and Newgrounds forums, mentioning U R MR GAY led to users deliberately removing letters from other video game titles in order to create humorous messages similar to the one from Super Mario Galaxy.

YA I M R U?

While the lettering in Super Mario Galaxy 2's title was styled identically to the first game, as Kotaku reported, there appeared to be no way to find another accidental message.
